M6 Mac mini Review: AI, Performance, Price and Specs

Why the M6 Mac mini is Surprisingly Serious About AI

M6 MAC MINI Apple M6 · $899 · 12-core CPU · 12-core GPU · Local AI · September 22, 2026

I've watched Apple turn the Mac mini from a cheap little desktop into a surprisingly capable computer over the years.

The new M6 version changes the conversation again.

At first glance, it looks almost exactly like the Mac mini you already know.

But underneath that familiar box, Apple has built its most AI-focused Mac mini yet.

The M6 brings Neural Accelerators into every GPU core, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, faster memory and Apple's first 2-nanometer Mac chip.

The more interesting question is not whether it is faster. It clearly is.

The question is whether this tiny $899 desktop has finally become a serious local-AI machine — or whether the marketing is running ahead of the hardware.

Apple's M6 Mac mini keeps the compact 5-by-5-inch design while adding major CPU, GPU and on-device AI improvements.

The important distinction: Apple says the M6 Mac mini delivers up to 4x faster AI performance than the M4 model, but independent testing shows that local AI performance can vary dramatically depending on the model and the amount of unified memory installed.

What Is Actually New in the M6 Mac mini?

The physical design is almost unchanged, and that is important.

Apple has kept the Mac mini at roughly 5 by 5 inches, with the M6 model weighing about 1.48 pounds. The real change is inside.

The M6 has a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, with Neural Accelerators now included in every GPU core.

Apple also gives the chip a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth depending on configuration.

Apple says the M6 delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, 2x faster graphics and 2x faster storage compared with the M4 Mac mini.

Those are Apple's own performance claims, so they should be read as vendor measurements rather than independent benchmark results.

The $899 Model Is More Interesting Than It Looks

The base M6 Mac mini starts with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD.

You can configure the M6 with 24GB or 32GB of memory and up to 2TB of storage.

That memory ceiling matters much more than it does on a conventional office PC.

Because CPU, GPU and AI workloads share unified memory, the amount of RAM can directly affect how comfortable the system feels with large local models and demanding multitasking.

M6 Mac mini configurations

  • Base M6: 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB memory and 256GB storage.
  • Higher M6 configurations: Up to 32GB unified memory and 2TB SSD storage.
  • M5 Pro: Starts with 24GB memory and can be configured up to 64GB.
  • Connectivity: M6 includes three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI and 2.5Gb Ethernet, configurable to 10Gb Ethernet.

The AI Upgrade Is Bigger Than a Neural Engine Number

Apple's most important M6 change is arguably the addition of Neural Accelerators to each GPU core.

That gives developers more hardware to work with when applications perform AI inference and other machine-learning tasks.

Apple says this combination produces up to 4x faster AI performance compared with the M4 Mac mini.

The M6 also introduces a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says can provide up to 2x the peak compute of the previous generation.

That makes the M6 particularly relevant for a new class of desktop workload: running AI models locally rather than sending every request to a cloud service.

But Here's the Part Apple’s Marketing Doesn't Tell You

Local AI performance is not one simple number.

Gizmodo tested the M6 Mac mini using Gemma 4 26B and Bonsai 2 27B through Ollama.

For a simple Python task using Gemma 4 26B, its 24GB M6 review unit took about 1 minute 30 seconds.

The reviewer's M4 Mac mini took roughly 16 minutes 30 seconds for the same task.

But there is a critical caveat: the M4 review system had 16GB of memory while the M6 system had 24GB. Gizmodo specifically noted that memory can make a major difference to how local models behave, so this should not be treated as a pure processor-generation benchmark.

Then Gizmodo tried Bonsai 2 27B, and the M6 struggled.

That is the real story about the M6 Mac mini and AI: it is clearly capable of local-model work, but model size and memory still establish a practical ceiling.

Why the 32GB Version May Matter More Than the CPU Upgrade

There is a temptation to look at Apple's M6 chip first and memory second.

For local AI, I would reverse that order.

The M6's unified-memory architecture means the processor, graphics and AI workloads share the same memory pool. A machine with more RAM can therefore be much more flexible when a model is too large for a smaller configuration.

The overlooked buying rule

If local AI is one of your main reasons for buying the M6 Mac mini, do not automatically choose the cheapest configuration. The additional memory may be more useful to your workflow than a faster SSD.

M6 Mac mini vs M5 Pro: The Difference Is Bigger Than Cores

The M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699 and can reach 64GB of unified memory.

It also moves from Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 5, making it better suited to high-bandwidth storage, multi-display setups and demanding professional workflows.

Apple says the M5 Pro can support up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU configuration.

For ordinary productivity, development and moderate creative work, the M6 is the more accessible option. For memory-heavy AI workloads and professional production, the M5 Pro's configuration headroom matters.

The Tiny Design Is Still the Mac mini's Superpower

Apple has not redesigned the enclosure because it did not need to.

The M6 Mac mini remains about 5 inches wide and deep and just under 2 inches tall.

It also keeps an internal power supply, rather than requiring a large external power brick.

That makes the machine unusually easy to leave running as an always-on desktop, development server or local AI box.

Apple is explicitly talking about the Mac mini as a platform for agentic workflows, not just traditional desktop apps.

That is a subtle but important change in how Apple sees this product.

The Ports May Matter More for AI Than You Think

The M6 has three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports supporting up to 40Gbps, HDMI and 2.5Gb Ethernet with an optional 10Gb upgrade.

That matters when your local AI workflow depends on external SSDs, model libraries or networked storage.

Meanwhile, the M5 Pro moves to Thunderbolt 5 with up to 120Gbps support.

What this means in practice

  • Local model storage: Fast external storage can keep large model files away from the internal SSD.
  • Developer workflows: Multiple high-speed peripherals can stay connected without relying entirely on hubs.
  • Professional setups: The M5 Pro's Thunderbolt 5 ports make it better suited to higher-bandwidth expansion.

Why Steve Jobs' Old Design Quote Still Fits

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” — Steve Jobs

That line feels particularly appropriate here because Apple's most interesting decision was not changing the Mac mini's appearance.

It was deciding what needed to change underneath it.

The M6 adds AI-specific hardware, faster memory and better connectivity without turning the machine into a larger workstation.

The M6 Mac mini's Most Overlooked Advantage

The biggest story may not be the benchmark score.

It is the ability to have a small computer that can live permanently on your desk and increasingly handle tasks locally.

Developers can experiment with local models. Creators can process media. Power users can run automation and agentic workflows.

And because the machine is so small, it does not require the physical commitment of a traditional workstation.

Think about the workload, not the chip name

If your main workload is browsers, documents, coding and light creative work, the M6 is already extremely capable. If your goal is large local models, choose memory first and processor second.
