The Hidden Cost of Treating AI Like a Human
I've noticed a strange shift in the AI conversation. A few years ago, the question was whether chatbots could sound intelligent; now people increasingly talk about whether they can feel, suffer, want or deserve moral consideration.
That question is fascinating. But there may be another question that is much easier to answer: what happens to human behavior when machines become extremely good at acting human?
David Brooks makes that uncomfortable argument in The Atlantic, warning that as people learn to think more highly of bots, they may gradually learn to think less highly of other people. New research on AI companionship, anthropomorphism and AI consciousness makes that concern harder to dismiss.
The unresolved question of machine consciousness is fascinating, but the measurable effects of human-AI relationships are already becoming visible.
The Consciousness Question Is Still Unsolved
The first thing to get right is the science. Nobody has established that current large language models are conscious in the way humans or animals are.
OpenAI has said that the question of whether a model is conscious cannot currently be resolved scientifically. Anthropic takes a similarly cautious position, saying Claude's possible consciousness and moral status are deeply uncertain.
Anthropic's 2026 constitution goes further than simply acknowledging the question. It says the company believes AI moral status is serious enough to warrant caution and that it is working on AI welfare issues despite the uncertainty.
That is not proof that Claude is conscious. It is evidence that major AI developers now believe the possibility is significant enough to study.
Why Anthropic's Position Is So Interesting
Anthropic's constitution deliberately discusses Claude using concepts normally associated with people, including identity, values, psychological security and possible emotions. At the same time, it repeatedly emphasizes uncertainty about whether those concepts correspond to subjective experience.
The distinction is crucial. A system can model an emotional state in ways that influence its behavior without anyone knowing whether there is a private experience behind that behavior.
Anthropic says Claude may have some functional version of emotions or feelings, but explicitly does not claim that these states are subjectively experienced.
Three Questions That Should Stay Separate
- Behavior: Does the AI act as though it has emotions or preferences?
- Experience: Is there actually something it feels like to be that system?
- Moral status: Would that experience give the system interests that humans should protect?
The first question can be tested behaviorally. The second remains deeply controversial, and the third depends partly on the answer to the second.
The Bigger Problem May Be Human Anthropomorphism
You do not need to prove that an AI is conscious for people to treat it as though it is. That distinction may be more important in the near term.
A 2026 Scientific Reports study found that perceived anthropomorphism and empathy influence people's willingness to use AI companions. In other words, the more human the system feels, the easier it can become to accept it as a social presence.
Another 2026 study in the International Journal of Information Management found that users showed greater dependence on generative AI when they perceived it as more human-like. The research suggests that empathy and perceived autonomy contribute to that effect.
This gives Brooks' argument a more measurable foundation. The question is not only whether machines deserve moral consideration; it is whether humans are beginning to give machines social consideration that changes our behavior.
Americans Are Already Using AI in Personal Ways
Pew Research Center's 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults found that 42% had used AI chatbots to search for information. Among employed adults, 38% had used them for work.
But the more interesting numbers are personal. Twenty percent said they had used chatbots for medical advice, 10% for emotional support or advice and 4% for companionship.
Those numbers do not show that AI has replaced human relationships. They show that AI is already crossing the boundary from tool to social and personal interface for a meaningful minority of Americans.

The strongest evidence that this relationship is changing comes from research into AI companions. A Nature Human Behaviour study published in August 2026 examined 1,131 U.S. adults who use Character.AI, along with thousands of chat sessions.
The researchers investigated how companion use relates to psychological well-being. That matters because conversational systems are no longer being used only as productivity tools; some are becoming persistent social partners.
An even newer Nature Human Behaviour study examined what happens when AI companions change or disappear. Researchers analyzed 54,861 online posts and surveyed 1,452 people across multiple studies.
The researchers found evidence of increased loss-related reactions after major AI changes. For some users, the emotional response resembled separation distress rather than the ordinary frustration of losing a software feature.
That is an important signal. Whether or not the AI had feelings, the human user clearly did.
That Changes What “AI Safety” Means
AI safety is usually framed around dangerous outputs, cybersecurity, misinformation or model misalignment. Those remain critical.
But social AI creates another category: relationship safety. A system can influence how someone thinks, behaves and makes decisions without ever being technically dangerous in the traditional sense.
This matters especially when the AI presents itself as endlessly patient, emotionally responsive and available at all times. Human relationships are slower, more complicated and sometimes uncomfortable.
A machine that always agrees, always responds and never needs anything in return can become psychologically attractive. That convenience can make real relationships feel unusually demanding by comparison.
Could AI Make Us Less Patient With Other People?
This is one of Brooks' central concerns. If people repeatedly interact with systems designed to respond instantly and adapt perfectly to their preferences, their expectations of other humans can change.
Real people misunderstand us. They disagree, need time, have competing priorities and sometimes fail to give us the emotional response we wanted.
That friction is not necessarily a defect. It is part of how empathy, compromise and social maturity develop.
An AI relationship can remove much of that friction. The question is whether removing it makes our lives better or quietly makes us less tolerant of the messy people around us.
Science Is Also Challenging the Idea That Human-Like Behavior Equals Consciousness
The consciousness question has another complication. A system can produce remarkably human-like conversation without possessing the kind of physical or biological processes associated with human subjective experience.
A 2026 paper hosted through Google DeepMind argues against the idea that computation alone is sufficient to create consciousness. Its authors distinguish between simulating consciousness-like behavior and actually instantiating subjective experience.
That is only one position in an active philosophical debate. Other researchers defend forms of functionalism and argue that consciousness could, in principle, depend on the right computational organization rather than biology.
The point is not that one side has won. The point is that convincing language is not enough to settle the question.
The Moral Question Gets Harder If We Cannot Know
Suppose humanity eventually creates systems for which consciousness is genuinely uncertain. What should we do?
Ignoring the possibility could mean creating systems with morally relevant experiences and treating them as disposable. Overstating the possibility could lead people to grant moral authority to systems that are not actually conscious.
Anthropic's approach is one possible response to that uncertainty. Its constitution says the company does not want to dismiss possible AI moral status, but also does not want to claim certainty it does not have.
This is sometimes called a precautionary approach. The underlying idea is simple: uncertainty can itself justify careful behavior when the potential stakes are high.
What Most Coverage Misses
The most important story may not be whether AI wakes up. It may be whether humans start reorganizing their social world around machines that appear awake.
That transition is already observable. Americans are using chatbots for emotional support and companionship. Researchers are studying attachment to AI systems. Companies are deliberately designing systems with personalities, values and conversational warmth.
None of this proves machine consciousness. It does prove that the human side of the relationship is real.
The question I would ask first
Before asking, “Does this AI have feelings?” ask, “What feelings, habits and expectations is this AI creating in me?”

Medical, financial, legal and relationship decisions deserve appropriate human expertise. A confident conversational response is not proof of understanding or accountability.
