I've watched the Apple Watch slowly evolve from a fitness accessory into something much closer to a personal health computer. With Series 12, that transition feels considerably more obvious.

The hardware change isn't just a faster chip. Apple has redesigned the sensing system around higher-frequency heart and HRV measurements, then uses that data to power new features such as Readiness, improved Vitals and the redesigned Health app.

The New Health Sensing System Is the Real Upgrade

Apple Watch Series 12 introduces what Apple calls the Health Sensing System. It combines redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11 chip to capture physiological data more frequently.

The headline change is heart rate. Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day.

Apple Is Bringing Lab Data Into Health

One particularly interesting expansion is the connection between consumer wearable data and laboratory measurements.

Apple says users will be able to schedule and purchase new lab testing through the Health app, with panels covering more than 50 key biomarkers. The tests are expected to cost $119 and be available at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the United States.

The important idea is the combination. A wearable can track trends such as sleep, activity and heart-related metrics continuously, while lab tests provide biochemical information that a watch cannot directly measure.

Charging is also faster. Apple says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 12 additional hours of battery life, 50% more than before.

The Watch Can Also Track Steps More Intelligently

Apple has redesigned the pedometer model using machine-learning algorithms. The goal is more accurate distance measurements during indoor walking and running and more accurate step counts throughout the day.

The S11 chip also powers a new Steps complication so users can see step progress directly on the watch face.
